Styles of television advertising

Adverts have different styles to target audiences to sell products. They also use different techniques to appeal to different people. There are eight different styles. They are 

  • Humour
  • Parody 
  • Shock
  •  Surrealism
  •  Intertexuality
  •  Repetition 
  • Sex Appeal
  •  Famous faces  

Humour 


An example of a humourous advert is the Volkswagen advert as it is showing children acting in a comical way. The advert also includes themes of pop culture with the child dressed as Darth Vader. This advert is appealing to adult males because they have a sense of nostalgia due to seeing the film when they were younger, it also appeals to families as it show children in the adverts. The advert is memorable because it shows that the child has powers like Darth Vader and then we find out he has been fooled by his father, so this humour will make it memorable. The advert is successful because this modal of car was very popular, this is because the advert was first seen at the american Superbowl and was shown to a large number of people 

Parody



An example of a parody advert is the t mobile royal wedding advert. It is a good advert because it is taking the mick of a big cultural event that took place a few years ago, and is memorable because it is showing a large event that is meant to be serious as a funny event. This advert makes people laugh and is appropriate for the product as it portrays a fun and technological advancement. This is successful as it caused a lot of phone be sold and became one of the most popular phone companies. 

Shock   


An example of a shock advert is the NSPCC advert as it show children in bad family situations. It is a good advert because it makes people think about how some children are treated by there parent and it is a reality shock. This advert makes people shocked about the appalling conditions some children are put in. The advert is appropriate as it makes people want to help these people and is trying to persuade people to donate money for these children to get help. This is a successful advert because the charity is a success and well known charity and receive a lot of donations.

Surrealism


An example of a surrealism advert is the Fame Perfume advert as it shows a lot of strange imagery. It is a good advert as it make people interested to find out what the advert is about and when the do they want to buy the product. This advert appeals to all of her fans as it is something that could be collected by them and it appeals to people who like alternative things. This advert is memorable as it is strange and a lot of thing out of the ordinary happen, it also demonstrates that the artist 'Lady Gaga' is as strange as her perfume and her fans. This is a successful advert as this perfume became one of the most selling celebrity perfume, beaten by Elizabeth Taylor.  

Intertextuality


An example of an intertextual advert is the M&S Christmas advert. This is a good advert as it show a lot of different pop culture that people will know by watching the advert, it also has a range of different styles of intertextuality that mirrors the range of things in the store. This advert is appealing to women who are shopping for Christmas because it gives them ideas of what to shop for, for there Christmas presents. This advert is memorable because it contains a large range of famous faces and it uses comedy elements which would make it appealing to people and stay in there heads. This is a successful advert because it is one of the largest stores and people always want to see what they will do for there adverts each year. 

Repetition


An example of a repetition advert is the 118 118 advert. This is a good advert as it uses the same two characters in every advert and people will then remember it more, they also use humour to make it well known to people. This advert is appealing to young adults as it is a helpline for people needing to know certain information e.g. cinema times. This advert is memorable because they use funny alternative to show people the range of services they can offer. The advert is successful due to the fact that many people will know of the advert and remember the number as it is basic and repeated in all the adverts. 

Sex Appeal


An example of a sex appeal advert is the Diet Coke advert as it shows a man taking his shirt off. This is appealing to women as the man has muscles and not many women would be used to this. The drink is aimed at women so they use this advert to make more women buy this product instead of there other product as women are more concerned about the way they look, it also appeals to women as it shows everyday women. This advert is memorable because the man is sexually attractive to women and people would talk about how they feel about the man. The advert is successful because it made more women buy diet coke instead of other fizzy products. 

Famous Faces


An example of a famous face advert is the Beyonce Pepsi advert as it shows a successful pop artist preparing for her new video. The drink is appealing to everyone who supports this artist as it shows what happens behind the camera in rehearsals. The advert is memorable as it shows the past looks of the artist making the audience feel nostalgic, it is also memorable because the song is a reminder of her album and is trying to persuade people to buy her music. This advert is successful because it is something that no one would forget due to there being a famous artist in the advert.
